Katy Alexander is a director and multimedia storytelling artist whose work explores the intersection of live performance, media and audience experience. Originally trained as a theatre director at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA), she creates interdisciplinary projects that combine theatre, film, projection and emerging technologies to develop new forms of audience experience.
Her work ranges from intimate theatrical productions to large-scale multimedia performances and events. She collaborates with performers, designers, technologists and writers to create visually rich storytelling environments integrating projection, animation, motion graphics, live performance and digital media.
Katy has directed and developed work across Australia, Europe and North America. Her collaborators and clients have included the Sydney Opera House, Imagination, Ogilvy & Mather, Heckler, NIDA and CalArts. She has also worked with internationally recognised innovators in multimedia performance including Robert Lepage and Ex Machina in Quebec and The Builders Association in New York.
She founded the performance ensemble Night Parrot Productions, through which she creates site-specific projection theatre and multimedia performance works including Alter Ego, presented as part of the Vivid Sydney Light Walk.
Alongside her creative practice, Katy holds a PhD in Integrated Media Performance from the University of New South Wales and is currently Research Manager at the CREATE Centre at the University of Sydney, supporting practice-led research exploring creativity across education, wellbeing and community contexts.
Her work is driven by a fascination with how audiences encounter stories in shared spaces — whether through theatre, digital media or emerging immersive experiences.
